Nature Walk on Newtown Creek

September 27, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Okay, I know what you are thinking. They opened a Nature Walk on NEWTOWN CREEK!?!! Yes, yes they did. This weekend the Newton Creek Nature Walk opens up in northeast Greenpoint located in Brooklyn. Long the polluted redheaded stepchild of New York waterways, the Department of Environmental Protection has built an 800-foot walkway and picnic and fishing area at a price tag of $3.2 million. Officially known as the Newtown Creek Nature Walk, it will open to the public this Saturday, September 29th, with light refreshments being served.

Now the kicker is, Newtown Creek is affectionately known as “Sh&t River” by the locals, and is the site of centuries worth of brutal environmental blasphemies. While some associate the Exxon Valdez as the worst oil spill in American history, the underground oil leakage in this part of Greenpoint dwarfs even that spectacular disaster in Alaska.

And of course, there is the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, which gives the place its Bladerunner feel. This plant also happens to be the biggest in the city, btw. Kerosene plants, animal-corpse processers and copper refineries long lined its banks. Plus years of plastic exporting, heavy industry and basic disregard for the environment that was the norm 200 years ago have made this one of the worst water systems in the world. Yes, the world.

So why go? Why even utter this new parks name? Because the more that people use it, the more likely it will be that the powers that be will finally clean it up. The new park will have a legal launching area for time, allowing kayakers and canoers on the creek.  While that might sound like the craziest idea ever, there are parts where you can instantly slip into wilderness and then seem to re-emerge on a set left over from the shooting of The Warriors.

With the lawsuit that state attorney general’s office filed against Exxon Mobil in July, more money will keep following into Newtown Creek, hopefully to restore it to its once natural state. And when that happens, you will know that New York City is really serious about going green.

Odds and Ends:

This Is War! Robert Capa at Work

September 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

This Is War! Robert Capa at WorkFor generations, war photographers were the link between the people back home and the mayhem of the battlefield. While today war is sanitized for the evening news, there was a time when the media printed the effects of war in the raw. One such photographer was Robert Capa, whose work from the front lines of the Spanish Civil War and World War II will be on display at the International Center of Photography. The exhibit, titled “This is War!”, includes over 2,3000 of Capa’s famous prints from the fascists wars of the last century.

John Vanderslice in Concert

September 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

John VandersliceI have been a fan of John Vanderslice since the epic indie band mk Ultra. After the band broke up in 1999, Vanderslice started a solo career that has produced countless brilliant albums. His use of analog instruments produces a richer and rawer sound than digital productions, and his song writing skills are top notch. Come enjoy his unique sound backed by narrative lyrics.

Don DeLillo reads Falling Man

September 24, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Born in New York City, Don DeLillo is often overlooked when discussing writers from the Big Apple. DeLillo made the national scene with his book White Noise in 1985, which lead to his opus Underworld. He is know for painting detailed portraits of American life in the last two centuries, and his new book updates this style. In Fallen Man, a WTC survivor walks out of the attacks unharmed physically, but we all know that day left other kinds of scars.
